Mechanical engineering is a broad field. Many of its sub-disciplines have a profound influence on our daily lives. If this field interests you, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with basic information about mechanical engineering and some of its terminology.
What is mechanical engineering?
Mechanical engineering is the engineering division that concerns the design, production, operation, and analysis of machines. This discipline uses physics, mathematics, and the study of materials in the design, manufacture, and maintenance of mechanical systems. Mechanical engineers are responsible for designing and analyzing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transportation systems, aircraft, boats, robotics, medical equipment, weapons, and many other products.
What are the branches of me?
ME is the broadest field of engineering and professional branches covering power plants, automobiles, and heating and cooling systems.
Power generation engineering
This branch uses thermodynamics, which is concerned with energy. Working in this branch of mechanical engineering assists, among others, in thermal production, nuclear, electric, solar, wind turbine, and hydroelectric power plants.
This branch involves the production of heating and cooling systems in a closed environment. This branch covers maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and cooling.
Make design, production, operation, and maintenance of systems and equipment that power vehicles.
It is a branch of vehicle engineering, and automotive engineers are responsible for designing production vehicles that run on roads. This branch of mechanical engineering involves specialists, such as safety engineers.
What tools are used in mechanical engineering?
The basic mechanical engineering process takes place in a workshop, where engineers tend to use standard tools. Among these tools are wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, and wrenches.
Many engineering companies use computer-aided engineering (CAE) programs, including computer-aided design (CAD) software, to produce two-dimensional and three-dimensional models of parts. PLM tools are programs that can perform complex simulations to determine how objects work and how feasible it is to manufacture a particular product.
Computer-assisted engineering programs may have the dual or sole purpose of making the manufacture of certain parts less expensive. In many cases, the use of computer programs reduces the need for manual labor. However, there is a process that only humans can do.
