    Duties and responsibilities

    • Supervise and direct the Counter Sales Staff.
    • Enforce all company policies.
    • Establish and maintain a comfortable and safe working environment for all employees.
    • Establish and maintain professional relationships with customers.
    • Identify and respond to the need for personnel changes at the yard.
    • Identity and articulate performance expectations to employees.
    • Create and maintain a well-rounded staff through cross training, open communications and continuing education.
    • Assist in the achievement of the company’s annual profit projections.
    • Maintain corporate guidelines and criteria for customer service.
    • Ensure cleanliness of yard is maintained.
    • Ensure an appropriate level of inventory is maintained at the yard.
    • Ensure merchandising programs are implemented.
    • Conduct accident investigations.
    • Chair the Safety Committee (yard level).
    • Respond to customer complaints and concerns.
    • Continually update product knowledge and selling techniques.
    • Assist customers at point-of-sale, as needed.

    Qualifications

    • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Knowledge of lumber and plywood purchasing principles, practices and protocols.
    • Knowledge of home and commercial construction principles, practices and protocols.
    • Keyboarding at minimum of 30 wpm required.
    • Ten-key by touch required.
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills and experience dealing with customers required.
    • Ability to aggressively pursue company’s best interest when selling building materials to customers.
    • Ability to prioritize work and manage time effectively.
    • Ability to concentrate and attend to detail amidst a busy office environment.
    • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of personalities.
    • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to daily changing needs/demands of the department.
    • Willingness to share department responsibilities in order to meet deadlines.
    • Ability to effectively manage and motivate employees.
    • Ability to work unsupervised and a desire for high level of responsibility.
    • Must be tolerance of co-workers, knowing that honest mistakes will be made.
    • Must be flexible to different personality types and work habits, knowing that goals may be achieved in different ways.
    • Education, Training & Experience (includes licenses or certifications)
    • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
    • Prior experience as a building materials salesperson preferred.
    • Prior supervisory/management experience preferred but not mandatory.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time
    • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
    • Ability to work outdoors and be mobile for the greater part of the day
    • Ability to stoop, bend, walk, and effectively communicate at levels normal for someone performing work with the general public primarily in the office environment of a customer or job site. Communication forms can include but are not limited to: in-person verbal and non-verbal, written, e-mail, telephone and public speaking to medium size groups.
